An eSIM is a small chip soldered inside the phone that stores mobile plans, called profiles, as software instead of as a plastic card. In most regions the S24 also keeps a physical nano-SIM tray, so you can use one physical SIM and one eSIM at the same time. The phone can store more than one eSIM profile, but only a limited number can be active at once, so you switch between them in settings. Some regional models and carrier-locked phones can behave differently, so it pays to check your exact model and lock status. ## How it works When you buy a travel eSIM, you receive an email with an install button. On an S24, tapping Install on Android downloads the eSIM profile straight onto the phone, and the phone adds it under Settings, Connections, SIM manager. You can also scan the QR code from another screen, which is handy for sharing the eSIM or installing it from a laptop. Once installed, you choose which line handles mobile data, calls and texts. ## Relevance to travelers With an S24, you can keep your home SIM active for calls and text messages while a travel eSIM handles cheaper local data, so you do not need to swap cards at the airport. You can install the eSIM before you fly, which means you land with data already set up for maps, ride-hailing and messaging. If your S24 is locked to your home carrier, the eSIM may not work, so confirm it is unlocked before you leave. ## Related terms - Galaxy S23 - dual SIM - eSIM profile - carrier unlocked phone ## Example Priya flies from Sydney to Tokyo with her Galaxy S24 Ultra. A week before the trip she checks that the phone is carrier unlocked, buys a Japan travel eSIM and opens the delivery email on her phone. She taps Install on Android and the eSIM is added in under a minute. On landing she switches mobile data to the travel eSIM, keeps her home SIM on for calls and texts, and turns data roaming off on the home line. ## Key takeaway The Galaxy S24 handles eSIM and a physical SIM together, so as long as the phone is carrier unlocked, a travel eSIM installs in one tap and you keep your home number. ## Frequently asked questions ### Does the Samsung Galaxy S24 support eSIM? Yes. The Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra all include eSIM support, and in most regions they also have a physical nano-SIM tray. Some regional variants and carrier-locked phones can differ, so check your exact model and lock status before relying on an eSIM. ### Can the Galaxy S24 use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time? Yes, in most regions the S24 works as a dual SIM phone with one physical SIM and one active eSIM. A common travel setup is to keep your home SIM for calls and texts and use the travel eSIM for mobile data. ### How do I install a travel eSIM on a Galaxy S24? Open your delivery email on the phone and tap Install on Android, which needs Android 10 or newer. The eSIM then appears in Settings, Connections, SIM manager. You can also scan the QR code from another screen if you want to install it from a different device or share it. ### Does my Galaxy S24 need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM? Yes. If your S24 is locked to your home carrier, it may refuse a plan from another provider. Ask your carrier to confirm the phone is unlocked before you travel, and do it early because some carriers take a few days to process the request. ### What is the difference between the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S23 for eSIM? Both phones support eSIM, so a travel eSIM works on either. The S24 launched in 2024 with newer software, while the S23 came out in 2023. Availability of eSIM and the number of profiles you can store can vary by region and software version, so check your own phone's SIM manager. ## Sources - Galaxy S24 Series Specifications and SIM Support — Samsung Electronics - How to Use eSIM on Your Galaxy Phone — Samsung Support - Embedded SIM Specification and Consumer Remote SIM Provisioning — GSMA --- Markdown version of https://fresim.com/glossary/galaxy-s24-esim.
